Objectives

The fashion industry, which is the second most polluting industry after oil, produces around 80 billion new garments every year. That's more than the entire world population could wear. 2 million tonnes of textile waste are dumped in landfills every year. This mass production and waste has far-reaching consequences for the planet and its people. With this initiative, we wanted to raise public awareness of clothing consumption and the great potential of buying and sharing second-hand clothes. Together with our international partners, we wanted to explore and implement the wide range of possibilities offered by exchange culture, in particular exchange stores, in the field of youth engagement and awareness-raising. By creating a community that stimulates collaborative change through sustainable actions and initiatives, we wanted to raise awareness and teach people how to integrate sustainability into their daily lives. The main objective of the "Swap Not Shop" project was to overcome cultural and economic barriers between young people and local community members by developing the youth empowerment and participation tool on the Swap Shop case study. More specifically: (1) facilitate exchange between youth workers and young people from different European and neighboring countries, (2) Enable an intercultural learning process for young people within and between local communities in different countries, (3) To learn from the experience of using the exchange workshop as a working tool for young people, (4) Identify issues related to youth work in multicultural communities, (5) develop and implement the exchange workshop concept as a tool for environmental awareness, solidarity and youth empowerment, (6) document and share the exchange process and results
