The S-DIY project aimed to achieve two main objectives at the same time: to encourage debate among the different social groups involved in the project and to increase their knowledge of EU and international action in favour of environmental sustainability. In particular, the project pursued the following objectives: 1. To encourage debate on social inclusion among the different groups of young people and trainers. 2. To raise interest among young people from different backgrounds in the SDGs and their implementation in the EU. 3. Identify best practices on how to foster an inclusive dialogue between young people from different social groups. 4. Improve the skills of youth trainers by providing them with innovative tools to promote young people's debate on international sustainability and active European citizenship. 5. Test an inclusive simulation model on the implementation of the SDGs in the EU. 6. To strengthen the "soft skills" of young participants by involving them actively in debates on the SDGs, in particular their sense of initiative, speaking skills, critical thinking, active listening, etc.
The idea for the project arose from 1) the need for the partners to respond to the demand from young learners for new activities that would engage them in peer-to-peer confrontation on environmental issues; 2) the need for educators to update their pedagogical skills, in particular to create/facilitate workshops on the theme of climate change; and 3) the desire of the partnership members to respond to the recommendations of the Council of Europe and the European Commission on engaging young people in actions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, the debates and discussions on the S-DIY platform aimed to respond to the target groups' need for social inclusion and helped to promote dialogue between groups of young people from different social backgrounds. In particular, Solution wanted to meet the needs of young people from the suburbs who have limited access to non-formal climate courses. CA University has had the opportunity to promote linguistic and cultural mediation for students whose mother tongue is not Italian. Finally, Eurospeak met the integration and training needs of jobseekers.
