Objectives

“Young ARTivists” is a project for young people with fewer opportunities that reflects on the theme of animal rights by applying the art of illustration. The protagonists of the project are youngsters with fewer opportunities who want to combine their creative talents and storytelling with their interest in animal rights. Youngsters need to create illustrated stories on the topic of animal protection. It is indeed a unique and significant form of Animal Rights activism – in short, it is called ARTivism. Using the art of illustration, storytelling, and non-formal education as instruments of inclusion of youth with fewer opportunities and for transmitting important messages on topics as animal rights, with sustainability taken into account, youth are at the heart of this project. The main aim of this project was to inform and raise awareness of youth with fewer opportunities on issues concerning animal rights through the art of illustration and non-formal education, and by enabling youth with fewer opportunities to actively contribute to the increase of awareness in their local communities on animal rights and animal protection by increasing the empathy towards animals. Participants have discovered how to creatively interpret global and local animal problems and their emotions, how to explore colors and art mediums, and how to make artworks that speak in defense of animal species. The result is four stories invented and illustrated by the participants - addressed to kids and adults - which were shared and used to raise awareness about animal protection in local communities and animalist organizations. At the end of the youth exchange, follow-up activities have been suggested and carried out in their communities to reflect and discuss animal rights through storytelling, illustrations, and picturebooks. Issues and needs addressed by the project were: More awareness, information, and interest in animal rights and animal protection among young people and local communities. More active and engaged youth with fewer opportunities in animal protection and animal rights. More possibilities for youth with fewer opportunities to practice and collaborate in the field of visual arts, animal rights, and sustainability. More support to animalist associations and more visibility on the topics of animal rights and animal protection. More opportunities for emerging young artists with fewer opportunities to show their own value and cultivate their own passion. The main objectives of the project were: To increase empathy of youth with fewer opportunities and people of participating countries towards other animal species and to respect every living being regardless of the species they belong to; To increase the sense of initiative of youth with fewer opportunities by providing the opportunity and supporting them to implement their ideas in artworks and for good causes; To develop critical thinking of youth through experiential and peer learning, and to enable the exchange of knowledge and skills on animal rights, animal protection, and activism; To strengthen solidarity, tolerance, and friendships between youth with fewer opportunities coming from different cultures and backgrounds; To exchange knowledge and skills of youth in the field of visual arts, illustration, and storytelling.
