Aim of this project was to provide space for young people to learn, discuss, exchange ideas and experience and develop needed competences to critically approach usage of internet, social networks and technology and to be able to use them in rational, responsible and useful way which will be beneficial for them. Project objectives were as follows: -To support participants’ understanding of development of internet, soc. networks and technology and their influence on young people’s lives (positive and negative) -To encourage young peoples’ critical thinking and approach to internet and social media through development of competences in media literacy, critical thinking, communication and time management -To celebrate Global Media and Information Literacy week and work together on raising the awareness of advantages and disadvantages of internet, soc. networks and technology -To provide space for sharing experience and for reflecting and analysing own behaviours and behaviours of other young people regarding the internet, social media and technology -To raise the awareness about cyber bullying and hate speech online and to get concrete tools to combat them -To raise the awareness about online safety and to get specific advices how to enhance it By implementing this project, we wanted to emphasise several issues going around the young people and their approach to social networks and technology nowadays. In a first place, that is amount of time young people spend online every day, no matter if it is using their smartphones, tablets, laptops etc. It seems that we are literally living in two parallel realities – one offline and one online and everything that happens offline needs to immediately be shared through social networks. Another issues we identified and raised throughout the project is that very often we do not know how to live and behave offline – we have communication issues, confidence issues, socialising issues… number of friends that we have online and our interactions online are far more different than offline and very often do not reflect reality – we created artificial words in fragile foundations that simply do not work in reality and which brings many different problems to individuals. One more problem was online safety – many of us are not aware of the dangers that can have serious consequences and do not know basic steps that can increase our safety. Through some of the workshops we discussed that and also learned to protect ourselves better while online. On the other hand, this project aimed to satisfy the learning needs of young people involved in the project. Some of those needs were: to learn about history and development of internet, soc. networks and technology since majority of us was born in internet era and we do not know how it is to be without smartphone or constant internet access. There was a need to learn more and discuss about how internet and social networks work and affect young people’s lives and project provided a lot of space for sharing the views and experiences. This was also important and it contributed to development of development of media literacy and critical thinking competences since without them young person cannot live in todays world. With the project we also wanted to give some attention to the topic of bullying and hate speech that is happening online, which is even worse online since it comes from someone who we do not even know very often, it is widely accessible to everyone and it can spread and grow much faster than in offline surrounding. Shortly, this project was done with the purpose of raising the most important issues and needs identified by young people who were involved into this project, from its beginning to the end. Young generations live online more than offline nowadays and critically approaching this kind of behaviour is crucial for getting the best out of it and to stay safe since there are many dangers online. It was done with the purpose of providing the space for sharing experiences and views, discussing topics of common interest, empowering each other and developing and improving knowledge, skills and attitudes unavoidable for surviving in “online jungle”.
