Objectives

Our project’s idea was to deal with one of the most important issues that young people are facing these days. Since personal opportunities are wider than ever, young people are facing a new challenge, which is to distinguish and select their own goals coming from the essence of their being. Even just a small step in finding their real purpose would make a tremendous effect on their life: their own path becomes more visible, so they won’t feel so anxious and lost in the middle of infinite information, possibilities and advices. Therefore, the main objective of the project was participants’ personal development. First of all, to gain more knowledge about their personalities, what they want to achieve in life, and what is blocking them. This includes raising awareness about certain patterns and habits that they unconsciously perform. Also, our goal was to encourage them to find and use their talent for themselves and for the welfare of the community. Another important objective to be mentioned is evolving critical thinking about the mass of information that they receive. In general, another goal of the project was to boost their self-confidence, which comes from a better understanding about themselves, and to boost their mental health. Apart from these, another general objective was to develop their intercultural communication and tolerance, by having an experience about living in an intercultural community, with its own rules, constructed by the participants themselves. In order to raise the effect of the project, and to twist it a little bit, we came up with the idea to combine the topic of personal development with the wonderful world of the well-known novel series: the Harry Potter universe. The story of Harry Potter can be much more interesting, if we attempt to look deeply into the symbols that have been used by its writer, J.K. Rowling. There are plenty of symbols which can be used to show relevant topics in connection with young people’s individual and community life. Just to mention a few examples: - the Boggart is a magical shape-shifting creature, always taking the shape of something or someone that a particular person fears the most. It can be easily borne down by a charm, forcing it to assume a shape you truly find amusing. -› individual fears and possible solutions - in Hogwarts (the school of Harry Potter), students are divided into 4 different Houses, according to a predominant attribute of their personality. In the novel, a magical hat (“Sorting Hat”) does this job, though students have free will to a certain extent. -› self-knowledge, prejudices about the different Houses, decision-making - there is an advanced technique, which can be used to defend against dark forces entering you, which is about emptying your mind. -› mental health and wellbeing - some people in the world of wizards and witches call others “pure-blooded” or “mud-blooded”, depending on their origin. If both of the parents have magical powers, then that person is “pure-blooded”, and is considered to be superior. If both parents are “muggles” (having no magical powers), then that person is “mud-blooded”, considered to be of low caste, or inferior. -› presenting prejudices and exclusion. There were two titles of the project, the more explanatory one was Find YourSelf in Hogwarts, which is the school of young wizards and witches in the story. The other was Mirror of Flesruoy, or the last word reversed: Mirror of Yourself. It is coming from the Harry Potter story, more precisely, it is based on a mysterious object, which, in simple terms, shows your heart’s deepest desire. It is called Mirror of Desire, originally and playfully written as Mirror of Erised. The happiest and most contented person would look into the mirror and see himself/herself just as the way he/she is. How many of us can say that about ourselves? Ordinary people must look deeply into their own hearts to find their true desires, in order to find their place in their community, in their country, in Europe, in the world. In fact, we - behind this project - are also ordinary people, who have realized the significance of this intrinsic search, and who were devoted to make all the efforts needed to create a safe, caring and fun atmosphere for young people for this essential exploration.
