In our time, one of the most popular methods against NEET is volunteering. However, there is a significant gap between service and learning even within volunteer projects, whether we look at local youth volunteer projects or transnational volunteer projects. Most organizations working with volunteers primarily focus on the service aspect, with only a small percentage dedicated to learning elements. Nevertheless, volunteer activities should also focus on the personal learning processes of volunteers alongside the social needs of local communities. Young people belonging to the NEET category need to strengthen their self-esteem, get to know themselves better, and increase their self-confidence, which is the first step in seeking employment. Therefore, youth workers should offer volunteer activities for NEET youths that assist them in taking this initial step. The core of volunteer activities is service-based learning. Youth workers should be able to devise, use, and adapt creative and innovative non-formal education methods, tools, and/or techniques to enable NEET youths to develop competencies. As project partners, we decided to explore the methodology of self-directed learning as a non-formal educational tool for the self-development of NEET youths and adapt it to our local and transnational youth volunteer projects. We can confirm that all the project's objectives have been met. With well-planned activities and the involvement of all partners and participants, we successfully achieved them in all project stages. The comprehensive aim of the training was to initiate local and European youth volunteer activities, with a particular focus on developing the competencies of ESC volunteers and local NEET youths using creative and innovative non-formal educational methods, such as self-directed and social learning, and then adapt these methods into their local youth volunteer work. Our theoretical activities allowed us to achieve the overall goal, such as: - Refreshing knowledge related to the Erasmus+ program, with a special focus on ESC. - Using the Maslow model in relation to NEET youths. - Defining self-directed learning. - Identifying the phases of the self-directed learning process according to Grow. - Utilizing IT technology as a supportive tool for self-directed learning by Saomya Saxena. - Introducing the concept of Personal Learning Networks by Joe Sabado. Our practical activities included: - Practicing the self-directed learning process according to Maurice Gibbon's methods. - Adapting the self-directed learning process and methods into local and European youth volunteer work. - Clarifying the roles and tasks of mentors, trainers, sending coordinators, and volunteer managers in the self-directed learning process of volunteers and ESC participants. - Determining the most suitable supporting tools for self-directed learning using IT technology within local and European youth volunteer activities. - Practicing the establishment of personal learning networks within local and European youth volunteer activities. - Developing new ESC projects using creative and innovative methods to address the situation of NEET youths, with a focus on competency development for local and European youths. The training's learning objectives were as follows: - Explore and adapt best practices in youth volunteer work from the participating countries; each represented organization prepared an interactive presentation about their country's situation. - Share and discover innovative youth work methods, tools, and techniques related to self-directed learning within local and European youth volunteer work. - Develop the ability to offer more appealing educational opportunities to NEET youths within local and European youth volunteer work to enhance their skills, particularly in areas such as self-reliance, entrepreneurship, foreign language communication, and expression of cultural differences. - Promote local and international volunteering as a means for self-directed and social learning, self-reflection, initiative, entrepreneurial mindset, employability, etc. - Our open educational resource titled "AID4NEETS" consists of descriptions of methods, tools, techniques, best practices, photos, and quotes related to self-directed learning within the Erasmus+ program's Youthpass learning process. - Develop European youth projects, with a particular focus on ESCs' self-directed and social learning, based on the Erasmus+ program KA Mobility projects for young people and youth workers. - During the training, 11 youth exchange programs, ESC projects, and youth worker mobilities were devised. It is expected that three youth worker mobility projects will be implemented in Hungary, Greece, and Romania by the R2 2023 deadline.
