Objectives

The project set out to accomplish three primary objectives: 1. Raise awareness of the psychological dimensions of job mobility among both individuals and career counsellors. This involves recognizing the factors that can either encourage or hinder someone’s decision to work abroad, as well as influence the overall success of that move. 2. Provide a comprehensive foundation in career counseling, with special attention to job mobility, to professionals who offer guidance services within their broader roles but have never received formal training in career development, ensuring more reliable and informed support for those considering or already living a work opportunity abroad. 3. Offer a specialized training course on international job mobility to already-trained career counsellors seeking to upskill and focus on cross-border placements, deepen their expertise in guiding individuals through the unique challenges and benefits of working overseas. Overall, the project recognized that psychological factors play a crucial role in shaping people’s mobility choices and in determining their effectiveness. By training both new and experienced practitioners, it boosted the quality and reach of mobility-focused career counseling.

Background

Despite substantial investments, intra-European job mobility remains limited. Many Europeans still hesitate to relocate, while existing career advising services often overlook deeper motivations and success factors, prioritizing immediate placements over thorough planning. Providing high-quality career counseling that addresses aspirations, skills, and concerns is thus vital to support reliable and successful international work mobility. Across the EU, career counseling programs are highly diversified, with many practitioners offering job guidance without receiving formal training in career development. Even among qualified professionals, cross-border career expertise remains limited, as few curricula include specialized modules on international mobility. To address these gaps, EMoCC has worked to increase both the number and competence of career counsellors, enhancing general advising methods and introducing specialized training on mobility-related topics for those aiming to work abroad. Underpinning this is EMoCC’s research on the psychological dimensions that drive mobility decisions, exploring success factors such as personal motivations, skills, satisfaction, needs, and preconditions.
