Objectives

The EU Green Deal is a comprehensive plan aimed at transforming various sectors to achieve environmental sustainability. Implementation requires active involvement from citizens and stakeholders to increase knowledge and awareness. The project focused on impacting SMEs in the fashion/textile sector, known for its significant environmental footprint. Specific objectives include developing and testing the GIF Competence Framework through participatory approaches. This involves activities such as desk research, surveys, interviews, and co-design workshops. The project aims to facilitate the adoption of the framework by creating training kits, user guides, and use cases for course design and curriculum development. Additionally, maximizing the reach and impact of the framework involves strategic dissemination to different stakeholders through existing networks, dedicated dissemination activities, and multiplier events. The project indeed emphasizes the importance of co-creating training programs and contents with educators and industry experts to ensure relevance and effectiveness.

Background

The textile industry has long been a growing sector, yet it is also one of the most polluting. Approximately 5-10% of global CO2 emissions are attributed to it. Recently, spurred by initiatives like the European Green New Deal, the European Union has been striving to mitigate this issue. Many textile producers are small to medium enterprises, some innovative but mostly traditional. The surge in demand for fast fashion has propelled their growth. Partnerships formed under projects like GIF aims to address the industry's carbon footprint, particularly in Eastern Europe, through education and training. GIF developed online courses and training kits promoting greener practices. Stakeholders across various sectors, from vocational education to green fashion associations, have been involved. The ultimate goal, aligned with the EU Green New Deal and UN Sustainable Development Goals, is to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from textiles by 2050. Empowering stakeholders with best practices and tools for sustainability is crucial for achieving this objective and securing a greener future for the EU.
