Objectives

The overall goal of the TETRIS project was to build capability and raise awareness among physical education teachers and youngsters regarding the prevention and contrast of gender-based violence acts in the sports sector and in the school physical education field. The specific objectives are: - Create a knowledge base of events related to the existence of violence - sexual or not - radicalization, discrimination and intolerance against both women and men in the sports sector. - Provide useful empowerment tools and resources that can increase the capability of individuals who have experienced GBV and their advocates to speak out. - Improve the capacity of educational staff and of public and private service providers working to support the individuals who have experienced GBV in the sport sector, by focusing on discrimination and restrictions against them. - Raise public awareness about the rights and the needs of individuals who have experienced GBV in the sports and physical education sectors.

Background

For the "Teacher Training to Combat Gender-Based Violence in Sport" (TETRIS) project we addressed the urgent issue of gender-based violence (GBV) in sports across the EU. Recent events of sexual, verbal, psychological, and physical harassment have highlighted the need for immediate action. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic period (2020-2021) saw a significant movement against GBV in sports, especially in Greece, where many brave individuals spoke out. Similar incidents in Germany and France underscored the widespread nature of the problem, affecting minors and involving influential sports figures since the 1980s. Despite the public evidence on such incidents, many actors in the sports sector remained silent, thus emphasizing the need for awareness and intervention. Building on previous studies such as the 2020 EC "Study on Gender-based Violence in Sports," TETRIS was designed to create a safer, more inclusive sports environment by ensuring effective prevention, reporting, and management of GBV incidents. The project has addressed the need to empower current and future PE teachers, raise awareness and protect future athletes who may be (or have been) severely affected by GBV.
