The project aimed to enhance universities’ collaboration with CSOs on community engagement for socio-economic inclusion, especially for vulnerable groups. A trans-disciplinary research group was formed to create international, research-based learning approaches and evidence-based intervention models. The consortium identified professional roles that improve community engagement, co-designed competency frameworks, and developed training curricula for students and CSO professionals. Local multi-stakeholder workshops were organized to create guidelines and policy recommendations supporting community engagement. Universities, partners in the project, believe in their role in addressing societal challenges through local community involvement. The project, involving 8 partners from 6 EU countries, worked for three years on three main objectives: SO1 - Developing innovative, evidence-based models for community engagement through continuous collaboration between universities and CSOs; SO2 - Expanding university offerings by creating training programs and courses focused on community engagement roles; SO3 - Promoting civic engagement through workshops that generate local policy recommendations for inclusive, effective initiatives.
Community engagement and participatory processes are crucial for implementing SDGs, particularly in promoting economic development, inclusion, and social cohesion. These strategies increase citizen understanding, especially among vulnerable groups, and strengthen individual and community capacities. The academic world and those working on inclusion must acquire innovative methods for involving communities to achieve long-term policy impacts. However, translating these strategies into practice is challenging. Developing partnerships between Civil Society Organizations and universities could bridge the gap between theory and practice. Such partnerships help align methods and share resources for inclusive change & community resilience. These models of intervention distribute knowledge and ownership among stakeholders, empowering vulnerable groups and reducing dependency. The project aimed to enhance community participation and citizen engagement by fostering synergies between academic institutions and the third sector. Researchers and students from partner universities worked with CSOs to gather and analyze data, creating models, toolkits, and recommendations to support these efforts.
