Objectives

The DiFree project was meant to successfully raise awareness among students and graduates about the potential of freelancing as a sustainable career, helping them recognize it as a viable and flexible professional path. By bridging the gap between academic education and the practical requirements of a freelancing career, the project wanted to provide targeted training and guidance to equip participants with essential skills. Through the creation of practical tools and training materials, students had to gain valuable digital and entrepreneurial competencies, enhancing their ability to navigate the job market. Additionally, the establishment of mentorship programs and Freelancer Hubs aimed to foster meaningful networking opportunities, enabling students to connect with experienced professionals and industry leaders. Strengthening ties between higher education institutions and the business sector, the project aimed to further promote freelancing as a legitimate and strategic work model, ensuring its long-term sustainability within the evolving labor market.

Background

The DiFree project has addressed the growing presence of digital freelancers in Europe, with self-employment reaching 15.8% of total employment (EUROSTAT 2018) and 32.9 million freelancers in 2019. The COVID-19 crisis has further accelerated this trend. Digital freelancing is now a distinct career path requiring both soft and hard skills, yet graduates often lack the necessary knowledge and practical experience. Universities and companies rarely provide training, making it difficult for young professionals to succeed. This gap discourages freelancing and fosters unstable alternatives. However, digitalization and ICT can enhance education and career prospects, supporting Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4). Freelancing offers opportunities for vulnerable workers, including single parents, geographically disadvantaged individuals, and people with mobility impairments. Exploring freelance careers is a crucial step for young graduates and HE students seeking professional growth. Therefore, by implementing the DiFree project the partneship has meant to equip young graduates and HE students with the skills, knowledge, and support needed to successfully navigate the freelance job market, fostering employment and economic resilience.
