S.U.P. (Sustainable Paths for Better Rural Mountain Communities) is a youth exchange designed to contribute to the fight against the depopulation of rural and peripheral European areas. One of the main objectives was to bring the youth population closer to the most important issues concerning geographically marginalized areas, especially mountain communities, and this aim was pursued, first of all, by carrying out an Erasmus+ mobility in a mountain village that is experiencing conspicuous and unrelenting youthful neglect. At the local level, therefore, the goal was to involve young people from the host country, Lama dei Peligni, and from the neighboring rural and mountain areas, offering an experience and a non-formal learning opportunity. At the same time, the main aim was to create an international environment (with people from Italy, Spain, Greece, Lithuania and Portugal) where there could be a real exchange of ideas and perspectives, in which young people from from areas with similar socio-geographical characteristics, or participants with different backgrounds but interested in rural life issues and choices. Through the non-formal educational activities developed, various objectives were also identified related to the personal and professional growth of the participants, deepening the knowledge of young people on the training opportunities of the European Union, especially the Erasmus+ programme, working on the development of the eight European key competences, on youth empowerment and leadership, promoting the activism of young people from rural areas. Furthermore, an objective of the project was to involve the rural communities of the young participants: Lama dei Peligni, first of all, having included small local businesses in the provision of services to the young participants, organizing meetings between the young people and the host community, and creating moments of direct dialogue with public institutions and associations; the "rural sending areas", going to promote, thanks to the experience of the participants, youth mobility for learning purposes. Another objective was to involve the young participants in an active conception of sustainable development projects, with the aim of creating cultural and public services in mountainous and hilly rural areas, thus bringing the potential of these areas to the center of the international debate, for the conception of new models of life and sociality, as well as of communities, more in line with the needs of the new generations. Finally, with the idea of finding for S.U.P. continuity over time and the possibility of re-proposing or evolving the idea into new cooperation projects between the partners, the ultimate goal was to broaden the range of action of the organizations, through cooperation, intercultural dialogue and comparison; create a network of organizations that could operate in a mountainous or hilly rural context, to facilitate their growth and find shared solutions and perspectives.
