Objectives

In the past year, Europe has seen the arrival of more than one million people fleeing war and persecution in other parts of the world. These fleeing people leave their countries to seek refuge in Europe. In 2019 a total of 4.2 million people immigrated to one of the EU Member States, while 2.7 million migrants were reported to have left an EU Member State (Eurostat). However, these total figures do not represent migration flows from/to the EU as a whole, as they also include flows between different EU Member States. In 2019, there were an estimated 2.7 million migrants to the EU from non-EU countries and approximately 1.2 million people migrated from the EU to a country outside the EU. In addition, 1.4 million people who previously resided in one EU Member State emigrated to another Member State (Eurostat). Today, even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are still many migration hotspots in Europe, where people live in makeshift refugee camps and squatter communities, often suffering from poor access to health care, food, weather-appropriate clothing and exposed to psychological trauma. Within this large group, there are also immigrants with disabilities who represent an invisible group of individuals. These factors strongly influence the level of integration and social inclusion of migrants. Lack of integration and social inclusion of migrants can create radicalisation and increased violence while hindering the benefits migrants can bring to their settling communities - such as innovation, increased entrepreneurship and economic benefits from their business activities. Often faced with a lack of access to services, lack of accessibility to care and protection risks, lack of access to medical care and insufficient access to assistive technologies that could facilitate communication and mobility and help in settlement communities, integration and social inclusion can become extremely difficult, especially for migrants with disabilities. Women, children, unaccompanied minors and older persons with disabilities are at greater risk of being discriminated against or excluded from receiving adequate support. To address these pressing issues, our partnership with several European organisations working with migration in numerous locations across Europe and the Mediterranean region is seeking to build and improve the capacities of youth workers in migrant communities to improve inclusion practices in Europe and in the local communities where project participants are active. Our main objective is to bring together youth workers and other professionals (some of whom may have a migration background and have been successful in their inclusion and integration process) working with and for migration, to train them in appropriate non-formal education methods and strategies (such as digital storytelling and silent book) to be used to facilitate the integration and social inclusion in their new communities of young immigrants or young people with a migration background, including those with disabilities. The specific objectives of this project are: - To acquire the right terminology in the field of migration in order to work correctly with the target group. - To equip the 21 participating youth workers with appropriate non-formal education methods and tools to facilitate their work with migrants for social inclusion and integration. - To raise the 21 participating youth workers' awareness of the Digital Storytelling methodology to broaden their perception of it and enable them to use digital tools to facilitate the social inclusion process of young people with a migration background. - To sensitise the 21 participating youth workers on the Silent book methodology to broaden their perception of it and enable them to use it to facilitate the social inclusion process of young people with a migration background. - Create a toolkit that will contain tools and methods that will help youth workers to engage and empower young people with a migration background through the use of digital storytelling and the silent book. - Create a documentary video that shares success stories of former migrants from participating countries in order to help break stereotypes related to migration and also share good practices related to the inclusion and integration of migrants.
