Objectives

The project aimed to reduce youth substance abuse by fostering healthier educational settings through intervention, prevention, and professional collaboration. Objectives were adapted based on the initial evaluation feedback: 1. To enhance teachers' understanding of substance abuse among youth, enabling them to differentiate between substance dependence, abuse, and addiction, and to recognize signs of substance abuse effectively 2. To equip teachers with the tools and resources needed to address substance abuse in educational settings, enabling proactive intervention and support for students facing substance abuse challenges. 3. To enhance teachers’ understanding of evidence-based prevention strategies for substance abuse, thus enabling them to implement proactive measures aimed at preventing substance abuse among students. 4. To educate teachers about substance abuse impacts at personal, peer, family, and societal levels via a guidebook outlining social and psychological symptoms, enhancing their understanding and response. 5. To establish an international network of professionals, fostering collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and dissemination of best practices, thereby enhancing responses at regional and international levels.

Background

The decision to apply was prompted by the urgent need to address rising substance abuse rates among European youth in educational settings, which pose risks to their health and academic success. An assessment to identify the challenges and knowledge gaps regarding substance abuse among educators was conducted, complementing statistical data provided in the application. Despite the wealth of information, educators felt they lacked sufficient training and access to resources to effectively tackle substance abuse issues. To ensure our approach was innovative and not merely replicating existing research, guidelines, or methodologies already available, we incorporated innovative elements of interactive workshops, real stories, legal and social frameworks to provide clear guidance and engage educators effectively. We've identified students' needs and proposed a holistic approach covering prevention, early intervention, and support services to effectively tackle substance abuse. The EDU MAP project aimed to combat substance abuse by empowering educators to create supportive, healthy environments, promoting student well-being and academic success through targeted interventions and collaboration with international partners.
