Objectives

The idea of the project "Social MEDIAtion" has been developed by young people, who wanted to create a movement of critical thinking and filtering the information. We decided to implement this project because over the last years the Internet has become the fastest, easiest and most accessible means of getting the necessary data, but the news shared on social media is too often unverified and fake and aims to misinform rather than inform. As a result, we face fake news in social media every day and also become victims of the disinformation, sharing fakes with families and friends. We noticed that young people, who are the main users of social media, do not have enough skills and knowledge on how to filter the massive amount of information and check its credibility. Therefore, we concluded that the time has come for us to take a proactive position and elaborate a strategy to deal with social media manipulations. Using the partnerships established in the previous Erasmus+ projects, we decided to gather active young people from Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland, Turkey, Georgia and Latvia to exchange good practices from different backgrounds and come up with new solutions to the problem of fakes in social media. We believe in educating on the above problems and non-formal education as an essential component of overcoming fakes and seek to magnify the reach of critical thinking towards a wider range of people beyond those affiliated with the project. In addition, the implementation of the project took place during Russian aggression in Ukraine, which added a special practical dimension to the issues of social media literacy we wanted to address. The main goal of the project was to develop an innovative and engaging method to educate young people about social media literacy and application of critical thinking to the information they receive. We planned to set up a self organised, open-minded and creative environment for 36 participants from 6 European countries for their cooperation in pursuit of the following project objectives: - To increase the critical thinking skills and abilities to deal with fakes in social media of 36 participants; - To raise participants` personal awareness and knowledge about critical thinking and data analysis; - To exchange best practices in dealing with fake news on social media and disinformation in 6 participating countries; - To learn throughout numerous workshops and activities about manipulation techniques and resilience to them; - To plan and launch follow-up 6 online campaigns aiming at promoting social media literacy of young generation.
