The project had two main objectives: to promote the use of intergenerational education in schools and pre-schools; and to promote the social inclusion and well-being of seniors. It should be noted that when we developed this project we wanted the organisations involved to talk more and cooperate more in the intergenerational field. Definitely, we see a significant synergy provided by the collaboration between the coordinating organization, the organizations representing children and the organizations representing seniors. During the project we developed a short guide summarising 6 different methods how joint activities for seniors and children can be organised. The organisations representing seniors and children also benefited a lot from the project as they had the opportunity to go on exchange visits and then put this experience into practice in the local community. In total, 12 activities were organised and carried out by each organisation in the local community, involving a significant number of seniors and a significant number of children. The seniors who took part in the most challenging phase of the project, international volunteering, also benefited. This process was challenging for all organisations.
The project was dedicated to bringing together two different planes of lifelong learning and everyday life. One plane is pre-school and primary school children and the other plane is seniors/ pensioners/ residents of social care institutions. One of the most important reasons why Gulbene Municipality submitted the project was that we have relatively little experience in intergenerational education and we were keen to introduce it in Gulbene Municipality, using the experience of other countries. In order to successfully implement this experience, we used the experience of other countries (Italy and Romania) and shared our experience. Overall, the project contributed to addressing the following needs in organisations and local communities: 1. organisations gained experience from other organisations and countries that can be used in their own community; 2. organisations increased the capacity of the local community specifically in the field of intergenerational education; 3. seniors were given the opportunity to experience intergenerational education activities both in an international setting and in the local community; 4. seniors and children gained the joy of communication and learning from each other.
