Objectives

“Ecological Footprint Reduction in Youth NGO Work” addresses one of the most important challenges of our time - sustainable development. Environmental challenges, climate change and commitment to more inclusive growth are part of the EU and our activity. EU investments in educational projects can contribute to a continuous increase in local capacities that lead to direct development. To ensure this positive contribution, we need to improve management practices - planning, management and logistics systems need to be aligned with sustainability issues. The project idea was based on respect for human rights and active participation. Sustainability is closely related to increasing general awareness about the civic duties of Europeans and other peoples. Our underlying aim was to promote an inclusive society where all the voices are heard and where people have sufficient education for being able to take meaningful participation and contribute to the life of their communities. Sustainable project management can be defined as adopting organizational strategies and activities that meet the needs of the organisation and its stakeholders today, while protecting, sustaining and enhancing the human and natural resources that will be needed in the future. Our time demands that managers pay more attention to environmental and social issues, regardless of the themes and direct objectives of their projects. The general principles for dealing with sustainability issues at the project level are perhaps obvious, yet often not applied in practice. Although sustainability and project management are not new and both topics are widely researched, alignment between the two is rare. Our intention was to guide further Erasmus+ projects towards the objectives of sustainable development - while we should have a conceptual goal for promoting sustainable development, at an operational level we should avoid practices that lead to unsustainable development. The goal of the course was to improve project management practices in civic and educational organizations, to teach how to adjust project management processes and methodologies so as to reduce the ecological footprint and expand the positive environmental, social and economic impact of the projects and events these organisations implement. The project was inspired by the Erasmus+ Youth Accreditation. Namely, there is a section that asks about environmental sustainability incorporated into the working of the organisations themselves. We came to the realization that many organisations do not apply nor know how to administer environmental planning and protection in their work, a theory we tested in the local context. Once proven to be true, we reached out to our international partners and discussed it with them. Some organisations do apply green practices in their work, but the majority do not. So, the team of ECO HAZELNUT went on to develop the idea in a proposal which we pitched to potential partners and further developed in a project proposal. The needs addressed in this proposal are needs experienced across a number of youth organisations in various parts of Europe. The needs are also incorporated in the Youth Strategy, the Youth Goals and the European Green Deal, as well as the UN sustainable development goals. By completing this project, we have positively impacted local and international youth workers and youth leaders, their organisations, young people and the local communities where these entities operate. The impact was made in the core of the problem and therefore it is a long-term impact. Having started working on core issues, we have started resolving and eliminating many interconnected issues from the very start. The goal of the training course was to elaborate a framework and change the traditional approach by broadening the focus of project personnel and removing elements that discourage being concerned with sustainability. The programme has contributed to achieving the following objectives: - awareness about environmental practices and official strategies at the European level among youth and other civic organisations; - adjustment and improvement in the management of youth NGOs increasing the levels of ecological practices; - a positive impact on the environment in the form of reduction of gas emissions, reusing and recycling and movement towards a circular economy, - promotion of active citizenship and European citizenship; - inclusion of marginalised groups, - positive contribution of each project to sustainable consumption and production, public health, social inclusion, sustainable transport, use of clean energy, conservation and management of natural resources; - adjusting the organisational and management practices from the selection of participants, choice of materials, food, venue and transportation to understanding a project's long-term social impact.
