Objectives

When young people do not get the necessary information on sexuality-related matters from their parents and in the schools, they often turn to less reliable informational sources - their peers and internet. Often because of lack of sexual education parents cannot provide quality sexual education for their kids, as well as sometimes parents do not understand their own sexuality; thus, it is hard to pass the knowledge to the younger generations. Unreliable and insufficient information on sex from peers and media can distort the healthy perception of sexuality (for example, youth watching pornographic content on the internet). Because of the lack of sexuality education, little knowledge about contraception and responsibility, there is an increasing number of adolescents with STIs (sexually transmitted infections), teenage pregnancies and sexual abuse. In order to address the issues mentioned, comprehensive, high-quality and facts-based sexuality education is needed. This goal has united youth organizations from Malta, Kosovo, Ukraine, Georgia, Lithuania, and Greece for the project “No Glove, No Love”. All these countries are facing serious challenges in regards to sexuality - i.e., 50% of Ukraine teenagers do not use contraception, even for one-night stands. To promote the importance and benefits of sexuality education, a youth exchange was hosted in Msida, Malta. 36 youngsters gathered from the participating countries to learn key things necessary to make a change in the field. The aim here was to enhance youth’s ability to make conscious decisions about their sexuality and relationships, as well as their well-being and health. To reach the main aim the following objectives have been set: 1) exchange knowledge and practices on sexuality education in the participating countries; 2) raise youth awareness about the sexually transmitted disease and the importance of screening for STDs; 3) find implementable ways to incorporate it into schools curriculum; 4) raise social awareness about the importance of sexuality education; 5) break the taboos and myths surrounding human sexuality. With this project, we seek to raise awareness of importance of sexual education as related to multiple human rights, including the right to life, the right to be free from torture, the right to privacy, the right to education, and the prohibition of discrimination.
