Objectives

With a Little help from my friends! is a project created and aimed at supporting youth workers by giving them skills and tools in order to be able to help the youth they work with when they face mental health challenges. The World Health Organisation stated some key fact about adolescents' mental health; One in six people are aged 10-19 years. Mental health conditions account for 16% of the global burden of disease and injury in people aged 10-19 years. Half of all mental health conditions start by 14 years of age but most cases are undetected and untreated(1). Globally, depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in 15-19-year-olds. The consequences of not addressing adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults. (as at 28th September 2020) Anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges were always issues which escalated in the past year when Covid-19 hit, a never lived before situation, where even though NGOs tried to keep in touch with their youth they still could not be able to help them in their mental well-being. However, mental health challenges have not become a phenomena in the past year. Youth go through various changes and difficulties and this can also affect their mental health and lifestyle; be it exams, relationships, their identity, the list is endless. This training will give skills in the field of empathy, self-reflection, understanding the first signs when to refer. This training will be beneficial to the organisations participating since it will give a possibility to learn how to support the youth they work with and therefore the skills earned will not only be used for a short time but also in years to come. We will also be working on creating tools towards an inclusive atmosphere to our young people going through difficult struggles.
