TThrough the project, the consortium sought to achieve several objectives: 1. Foster biodiversity preservation in rural and maritime areas of European islands. 2. Provide high-quality learning opportunities for farmers, shepherds, and fishermen in biodiversity preservation. 3. Develop user-friendly digital tools to support these stakeholders in preserving biodiversity in their daily work.
The BioIslands project aimed to address the urgent need for biodiversity preservation in rural and maritime areas, particularly in European islands, driven by recognizing the critical interdependence between human health and ecosystem health, especially highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The project focused on three main sectors—agriculture, pastoralism, and fisheries—where biodiversity preservation is essential but faces challenges such as land-use intensity, invasive species, and unsustainable practices. The project targeted farmers, shepherds, and fishermen, acknowledging their role as key actors in implementing biodiversity preservation strategies.
