Objectives

In 2021 the European continent is recovering from the pandemic, and in the meantime lots of people -including young people- have been drastically using plastic more. This came in the form of re-usable cups, plastic, and takeaway bags and even microplastics in daily cosmetic products, and most importantly single use face masks. The crucial issue is that much of these wastes have been left uncontrollable in the environment which ends up in rivers, seas and eventually oceans. Not only are these plastic amounts endangering citizens livelihoods they also harm the gains citizens can enjoy from these waterflows by means of reduced economic activity. Both COP16 and the EU climate commission in Paris published a report that to a high extend their indeed exist a correlation between low awareness of citizens -and especially youth- and further limitation of plastic in the oceans. In addition, the report marks that young people can contribute to positive changemaking by standing as an inspirator and using their skills to increase the readiness to act to society and their peers. Doing so requires the utilisation of creative methods and a further deepened awareness creation to curb climate change. Erasmus + is Ready for cleaner oceans (E-RCO) contributes to increase and utilise soft skills under the young people who participate in our project. It is the youth who often have negative associations on being a change-maker because they view the climate as complex and boring, and that they will be the ones facing most of the consequences of current unsustainable societies, but have least to say in reshaping these systems, as in that their voice is not heard sufficiently. Yet it would be very useful to make an positive change by an increased and more firm emphasis on intercultural friendship, mutual trust-making and along the process discover new habits and lifestyles who make them a positive role model for their surrounding and sustain the long-term impact. Simultaneously E-RCO contributes towards these youngster’s employment skills which is urgently needed when taking in to account their desperate NEET (less education, less training) situations where they battle as well with geographical and economical obstacles. It is thus the aim of E-RCO to increase the involvement of this target group of young people who are not equally voiced in nowadays society and how them they are able -and have the capacity- to set up grassroots movements which increase public and civil society awareness on the issue. The general objective of E-RCO is to support the professional and personal development of young people, thereby contributing towards strengthening European identity on combatting climate change, and active young people who are better equipped to show their creativity and innovation to local communities in the EU member states. This is being done via a Youth Exchange which is being introduced, implemented and evaluated by young people who participate themselves helping to increase their (verbal) communication skills, technical skills and ability to learn from other cultures, via introduced non-formal activities via the proposed workshops, exercises, debates, role-plays and outdoor activities. This project specifically targets the priority of Erasmus + in 2021-2027 namely Green Erasmus + | Sustainability, environment, and climate as it promotes sustainable behaviour and makes participants aware of the importance to reduce and offset environmental footprint of mobility activities. This is being done via introducing sustainable ways of living (transport, food, lifestyles) towards the young people who are participating but very importantly as this project is taking place on the Coast, it is contributing towards the need for participants to actively engage with the oceans and seas as a tool for solutions.
