Objectives

Responding to the needs of seniors resulting from our organisation's needs analysis, we wanted to focus on improving the quality of life of seniors. One of our main objectives was to increase their self-development and thus improve their self-esteem and sense of happiness by involving them in the non-formal and informal education provided by our organization. To do this, we wanted to implement more activities for senior citizens, inspired by mobilities to partners in Bulgaria, Germany and Italy. In addition, the aim of this project was to increase our educators' knowledge of the most popular senior activities in the partner countries, to familiarise them with the most effective methodologies and to allow them to exchange experiences in this area with other European senior education institutions. The above-mentioned goals were to convince seniors in our region that self-fulfilment, happiness and a feeling of being needed, as well as making new friends are priorities and should be pursued by "getting out of the house" and participating in activities offered by the Association of Polish Folk High Schools and the Radawnica Folk High School itself and inspired by experienced educators and partner organisations.

Background

The project was written as a response to an identified need to educate seniors about positive ways and active ways of spending their time after retirement age. As part of the project, participants visited three European regions, where they met 'peers' in other countries, participated in integration activities, and learnt about the countries they were in. In addition, another element of this project were 'job shadowing' trips (each visit was attended by 2 educators from UL Radawnica), during which UL staff learned what ways of activating seniors were proposed in the organisations they visited. The Polish Folk High School Association and its Folk High School in Radawnica are involved in activities for adults and the development of civil society in the region of Krajna Złotowska. In addition, one of the main tasks of the Folk High School is to improve the quality of life of people at risk of exclusion due to their wealth, location or other factors which may influence this, through informal and non-formal organisation of adult education in the area of improving basic or cultural competences.
