Objectives

"Youth and Media” is a training course that involved 21 participants from Poland, the Czech Republic, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Georgia, and Armenia for an 8-day program in Lebork, Poland in an open process of discussing, analyzing, and debating on the importance of media literacy, its influence on the society and critical thinking. The background that motivated us to design this training course was related to the serious scenario that media consumption in today's society is producing. Although it is well known that young people spend an increased amount of time each day consuming media, they are frequently unprepared for deliberate media consumption because they have not been taught how to select reliable sources of information or comprehend messages. When the media is not well understood, this occasionally has a considerable impact on young society. Since such material is frequently not taught in public schools, youth workers should take on the duty of educating youngsters. Unfortunately, youth workers themselves frequently suffer from a lack of training resources and expertise for teaching media literacy, whether formally or informally. With this project we seek to gain the following main outcomes: - improved competencies in critical thinking and analysis of media messages; - raised awareness on media-related issues in 7 countries, among youth, local communities, etc. - improved inter-cultural learning skills and behaviors; - enhanced international networking and communication; - developed media literacy skills & competencies; - improved knowledge of media's influence on the youth; - enhanced discussing and debating skills of participants, etc. - raised tolerance among different nationalities. By organizing this project we wanted to raise awareness about the importance of media and the correct interpretation of received information as well as to raise awareness of misinformation, bias, and fake news. Sometimes, not understanding the media in the correct way gives results in a dramatic impact on young society. We believed that it has fundamental importance to be able to analyze and correctly interpret the main media messages. As most of the youth consume information as it is delivered, with this training course we tried to reduce expected negative results.
