The “Be the Change you want to see” project addressed the problem of a lack of proper impact measurement of projects in many of the European NGOs and youth institutions, especially the small ones that have limited capacity and scarce resources. The project tackled the need to incorporate impact measurement and communication practices in the life of every European NGO in order to: - improve the quality of international youth mobility activities, - make reflection, evaluation, and change measurement practices a standard action in every NGO working for the youth, - be able to objectively assess to which degree the activities that youth organisations offer are really meaningful, beneficial for the participants, and in line with various European Youth policies (e.g. the EU Youth Strategy and the Youth Participation Strategy), - commit to communicating the impact research results for the common benefit of all European youth NGOs. The “Be the Change you want to see” project was created by Stowarzyszenie Jeden Świat – the Polish Branch of Service Civil International (Poland), and was implemented together with its 8 partners: Projets Internationaux ASBL (Belgium), Kansainvälinen vapaaehtoistyö ry (Finland), Service Civil International - Deutscher Zweig E.V. (Germany), Utilapu Nemzetkozi Epitotabor Halozat Egyesulet (Hungary), Voluntary Service International (Ireland), Associação Para Onde? (Portugal), Voluntariat Zavod za Mednonarodno Prostovoljno Delo Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Servei Civil Internacional de Catalunya (Spain). Our project aims were: - to build the capacity of 9 organisations in the topic of measuring and communicating impact, - to enable the partners to identify and invest in ways of organising international mobility activities that bring the best results and lasting change to the participating youth, - to prove that it is feasible to streamline impact measurement and communication of results into the regular practice of European organisations working for the youth, and do it even with scarce resources, - to create a set of practical materials for measuring results and impact of international mobility activities, - to contribute to the Erasmus+ Programme goals and the European policies in the field of youth, - to promote inclusion, civic engagement and a sense of responsibility for societal processes. Through the project, Stowarzyszenie Jeden Świat – SCI Poland proved the benefits of impact measurement and its effect on the quality of youth activities and turned knowledge into regular practice – first for 9 participating NGOs, and then encouraging an ever-growing circle of European youth organisations. The famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi says “Be the change you want to see in the world”. The project participants committed to be this change and best examples in impact measurement and high-quality youth work – and to help others change, too!
