The general objetive of this project was to strengthen people's appropriation of water as a human right and a common good and to mobilize citizens to participate and defend the environment in a context of climate change. The following specific objectives were intended to be achieved within the scope of this project: - To develop innovative adult education methodologies based on the combination of recreational and playful experiences in rivers and other natural spaces, the acquisition of relevant knowledge about the environment and participation, and behavioral changes and civic engagement; - To enhance adult education, and as a way of including and promoting their active participation in society, using web 2.0 tools as a pillar of lifelong learning, integrating outdoor recreational experiences, non-formal education and learning and digital activism; - To reinforce learning processes based on gamification logic so that, in addition to knowledge and skills, attitudes and behaviors in favor of environmental protection and active citizenship are developed.
LIVING RIVERS aims to strengthen the appropriation of water as a human right and a common good, mobilizing citizens to defend the environment in the context of climate change. Based on the Rede Douro Vivo project, we identified gaps in adult education, particularly among the elderly, minorities, and people with disabilities, regarding the value of ecosystems and participation in water management. These processes are bureaucratic, technical, and not user-friendly, making engagement difficult. Additionally, formal education has provided little content on environmental issues and citizenship for adults. The project seeks to address these gaps by promoting knowledge about water management and river protection. The experience in the Douro basin and similar challenges in Spain and Sicily highlight the urgency of raising awareness about sustainable water use, ecosystem preservation, and active involvement in environmental governance.
