Active citizenship is YUPI’s main area of action, and our main field of experience in the implementation of mobility activities. In our formative action and with local projects, we have found that information, knowledge and action in citizenship needs constant improvement, in a world characterized by large gaps in youth participation, proactivity and entrepreneurship at all levels inside and outside Europe. The lacks in citizen awareness contribute at the root of phenomena of intolerance, discrimination, extremism, violence, human rights violations, as well as of situations of stagnation and degradation of life both in urban and rural environments. The lack of an active citizenship stance is the mark of an impoverished present, and a burden on the imagination of future possibilities. Spreading active citizenship values aims at reviving hope, autonomy, development, autodetermination and capacity to contribute to the democratic life of individuals and their communities, feeding the virtuous circle of collaboration, networking, exchange, learning and life improvement. In a world threatened by serious challenges to democracy, with signs of intolerance and violence/hate spread in a climate of fear, education still remains the most powerful tool for transformation. It is necessary to create educational programmes to inform, empower and motivate youth in our organisations with a follow-up in their dissemination actions which must be structured, pedagogical and have a multiplying and transforming effect, to promote values, skills, ideals, knowledge and techniques that reproduce active citizenship as a fundamental attitude to social life. Based on our experience in conceiving and implementing projects in support of active citizenship, we can observe that one of the biggest barriers faced by youngsters in fueling an active citizenship attitude is the relevant and increasing inability to create social connection, to establish steady and accountable human links. Thus, in conceiving this project, we aimed to propose a YE to capacitate youngsters to stimulate their sense of active citizenship through discovering new ways of connecting with others. In this way, and considering the musical background of two YUPI members, we based ourselves on the evidence that music is a naturally accessible field of experience, open in some form to any human being, capable of showing in a very direct way the importance of attitudes of empathy, listening, self-listening, curiosity, cooperation, creativity, initiative and collective awareness. From the standpoint of youth education it was already clear that music in general has great relevance for social media such as Tik Tok, Facebook, Instagram, etc. In addition, and not so surprisingly, during the COVID-19 lockdowns music appeared as one of the most relevant facts that enabled diverse people to live, express and resignify this period in a collective connection: live streaming concerts, splitscreen videos, people singing on balconies, and other ways to express, interact and socialize even though happening online. This fact just reinforced our conviction that the connection between music and citizenship is a symptomatic intersection worthy to be practically explored as a very powerful tool to work with youngsters. All these reasons defined the way we chose to pursue the main goal of this YE, which consists in empowering youth to deepen their social connections skills.
