Objectives

The Think.Eat.Compost it | Behavior change project aims to explore a contemporary problem that is common across Europe and urgently needs to be addressed: food waste and biodegradable waste management and treatment. It is estimated that in Europe about 88 million tons of food is wasted annually (Fusions, 2016). This not only represents an economic or ethical problem, but also a serious environmental problem due to the unnecessary expenditure of limited natural resources. All of us, from the producer to the end consumer, have a responsibility to take a stand in this fight. Therefore, this project aimed to create a space for debate, reflection, analysis of our actions and the communities where we live, and the search for solutions that are within the reach of each one of us, thus changing behavioral patterns. Another proposal of the project was the theme of management and treatment of biodegradable waste. In this sense, after acquiring theoretical and practical tools, two composters were built and placed in a public school and another one in an organic farm, thus starting a process of awareness and education about the problem in the community of Terceira Island (Azores). In summary, the project Think.Eat.Compost.it | Behavior change aimed to achieve the following objectives: - Increase the awareness of young people about the impact of our actions on the environment; - To help young people observe and analyze the context of their country/community in terms of food waste and biodegradable waste treatment; - To provide young people with theoretical and practical tools. -To encourage young people to play an active role in their community and/or their routine, thus solving problems related to food waste. - Contribute to a green Europe through the implementation of two composting bins.
