In 2018, 29% of 16-29-year-olds were at risk of poverty or social exclusion and 11.6% of 15-24-year-olds were not in any kind of education, employment or training (NEETs), while 15.9% of young people in this age group were unemployed - double the rate of the general population. And socio-economic and democratic exclusion go hand in hand - young people who struggle with disadvantage are generally less active citizens and have less trust in democratic institutions.
