Objectives

Note: This project was fully audited by Ms. Anabela Cardante, project officer of the National Agency of Portugal on December 28th, 2023. The audit involved complete documentation with dissemination (all physical and digital documents like insurance, travel tickets, and reimbursement, dissemination material, project merch, outreach platform, and inspection of the venue). Before applying for the project, we noticed that in the Balkans, the process of peacebuilding and reconciliation is still under question. Usually, it is described as slow and lacking political willingness. We saw it also during the Ukrainian war, where the Balkans are drifting between their support to the UE and their support to Russia as the political landscape is not strong enough. We also noticed a stronger raise of hate speech used by people engaged in politics, their discriminatory approaches towards historically underrepresented groups and, in extreme cases also support for raising violent radicalisation. We saw it in examples during 2021 and 2022 in regions such as Albania, Serbia or Kosovo*. We saw the need to equip young people with knowledge, skills and competencies for peaceful political participation and increase their participation in democratic life and civic engagement through non-formal learning processes. By learning about peace, reconciliation, peaceful political participation, non-violent conflict resolution and how important peaceful political education is, we aimed to assure that the next generation of politicians will act peacefully in the future and completely understand the connection between peace and political decision making. In addition, we followed the request of EU institutions to strengthen the ties between the EU and the Neighbourhood country's community leaders based on European values and support between youth political actors. We wanted to ensure that young activists and leaders from the Balkans have a chance to share and exchange knowledge and experiences with people engaged in politics coming from the different EU countries. The aim was to equip 39 young activists and leaders active in political youth work with competencies to practice their right to political participation which would lead to building a sustainable culture of peace and respect for human rights. The objectives were: To equip participants with knowledge on concepts of peace, various forms of violence, conflict, peacebuilding, the culture of peace and human rights; To understand the importance of peaceful political participation in the context of human rights and existing legal documents; To map the realities in the participating countries on how violence used in politics affects local communities; To create a safe space among participants, which would be the base for their future cooperation in the field of sustainable peace in political participation To develop the participants` empathy, open-minded attitude and a sense of responsibility for their own actions in line with peace education, as well as the desire to work towards the ideals of universal human rights; To equip participants with tools to practice peaceful political participation, such as peaceful conflict transformation, dialogue creation, nonviolent communication, active listening, street epistemology and empathy; To ensure space for reflection on the links between political decision-making and peacebuilding and ways in which young people can incorporate one into another; To facilitate the process of planning at least 6 activities, multiplying the competencies gained at the project, in the partner countries designed and implemented by the participants. to create innovative tools for suistainable digital learning in the field of peaceful political participation, such as e-learning modules in the "Peaceful Academy".
