Objectives

The Erasmus+ Youth KA1 Project- Energy, Ideas, Action, Change (EIAC) sought to work with 27 youth workers (YWs), who were actively working with marginalised young people (YP) to develop their skills and experiences around the use of arts and culture in order tackle the needs of these YP. The project helped equip our participants with skills and direct art and cultural experiences around tackling the needs of marginalised YP from partner countries. EIAC enabled our YWs to develop innovative activities for their YP in their home institutions that would tackle the problems YP face for instance in the Romania we wanted to use arts and culture to tackle youth disadvantage and meet the EU Strategy on Youth and finding work. The project helped provide YWs from the Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, and Turkey to come together in Galati on a intensive training course. lasting 6 days, it included workshops, practical activities and direct support of local YP, The reason for this project included: 1)Equipping YWs with new skills and experiences to broaden out their skills 2)Allow YWs to exchange experiences with other working across similar issues 3)Provide examples of best practice around art and culture, that they can adapt in their home countries that can be shared with other YWs and youth organizations. 4)Leading to a better understanding of the use of art and culture as engager to support and sustain YP into employment or education. and help meet the EU Youth Strategy 5)Facilitate peering learning with YWs 6)Provide our YWs with the experiences to work with YP in art and cultural setting that focuses on working with YP to find and sustain work 7)Helping YWs connect with youth culture and the societal issues they face in partner countries and their similarities. Erasmus+ provided the funding needed to test our theory of using art and culture as engager and hooks to provide support to our YP. We provided our YWs with the knowledge and skills and experience to work with YP in a much more innovative and creative away. For instance we used art to tackle youth and health and inclusion Using arts and culture to help YP resolve personal aggression in a constructive way an, The project also provided opportunities of inter generational learning by bringing YP and older generations together to share traditional art and culture and compare with YPs culture. The reason for this project is that lots of youth work services and training opportunities for YWs has been lost or focused on key issues. Funding for YP needs around learning and training has been reduced, with many skills being lost. This project enabled us to rediscover this, develop a resource of materials, as well as helping to train new YWs. This project linked to the EU principles by enabling the exchange of ideas and learning, the mobility of YP, creating an EU identity and self worth as well as improving skills and youth provision. By developing the project we had hoped that our YWs are able to: 1)Better work with YP, engaging with traditions, culture and its art forms and interpreting it in a modern way around societal issues effecting YP 2)Be more confident and have new skills and experiences and be prepared to support YP facing complex issues 3)See themselves as Europeans able to access learning and training opportunities across the EU 4)Be able to develop their own projects and ideas based on learning from the project to improve youth work provision We want to use this project to open a dialogue between YWs, many of who work with YP all facing the same problems (unemployment low skills, low confidence, alienation from mainstream society, anti social behaviours, disability, pregnancy, exploitation, violence, substance misuse, educational failure, etc), by bringing YWs together we hope that we can create an exchange of ideas that will show everyone that we can work together to develop common solutions. This project is a vehicle for skills and provision development within partner countries. We are using the Arts and Culture, as a basis for learning this is primarily due to the fact that many YWs are not so comfortable working across these concepts as hooks that can be used to. engage empower, motivate and support YP in order that their needs can be met like finding a job or be sustained in education. This would also help enhance the role of YWs The added value here is that there will be a compendium of learning shared across partner countries and that will lead to pilot projects in home countries
