Objectives

By implementing the SAFE project, we aimed to achieve a transformative impact on the digital lives of seniors. Our primary goal was to empower older adults with the skills and confidence to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. We envisioned a community of senior learners who could critically assess online information, identify fake news, and engage in informed civic discussions. We sought to equip adult educators with innovative, age-sensitive teaching methods, fostering a supportive learning environment where seniors could thrive. By enhancing digital literacy and critical thinking skills, we aimed to bridge the generational digital divide, ensuring that seniors are not left behind in the rapidly evolving digital world. Our broader aspiration was to promote digital inclusion and active citizenship among older adults, enriching their social interactions and personal growth. Through the creation of accessible learning resources and a sustainable information hub, we hoped to create a lasting legacy that would continue to benefit seniors and educators beyond the project's lifetime. Ultimately, we aimed to enhance the quality of life for seniors, making them confident, informed, and active participants in the digital age

Background

We applied for the SAFE (Seniors’ Anti-Fake Education) project to tackle a pressing issue: the vulnerability of seniors to digital misinformation. In our rapidly evolving digital world, many older adults lack the media literacy and critical thinking skills needed to navigate online information safely. This digital gap has been further highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, where the spread of fake news has had significant impacts on public health and social cohesion. Our goal was to empower seniors (65+) by enhancing their ability to discern accurate information from misinformation, thereby fostering their digital inclusion and active citizenship. We identified a critical need to equip adult educators with age-sensitive teaching methodologies to support this demographic effectively. By developing innovative, accessible resources and training programs, we aimed to create a sustainable impact, ensuring seniors can confidently engage with digital media, stay informed, and participate in civic discussions. Through the SAFE project, we aspired to bridge the digital divide, promote lifelong learning, and enhance the quality of life for older adults across Europe.
