Environmental pollution and drought have become one of the most important problems in the world in recent years. On the one hand, the rapid increase in the world population, on the other hand, the increase in people's demands and consumption, as well as the development of industry, have started to put a great pressure on the natural resources on the earth. Especially the development of the industry and the increasing consumption frenzy have brought along serious environmental problems in the world. Environmental pollution, on the other hand, is defined as all kinds of environmental problems that occur with the formation of negative effects on air, water and soil, which are the basic physical elements of nature, and negatively affect the vital activities of living things. Water resources, especially oceans, seas, lakes and streams, are nowadays mostly seen as receiving or removing environments, which plays an important role in the pollution of water resources on earth. Among the elements that pollute water resources; bacteria, viruses and other disease-causing organisms, organic materials, industrial wastes, oils, synthetic detergents, radioactive substances, pesticides, artificial organic chemicals, inorganic salts, artificial and natural agricultural fertilizers and waste heat. The presence of more or less of these substances in the water affects the quality of that water and therefore determines the use of the water. In this context, there are many water basins that Turkey needs to protect. One of these is the Burdur Lake Basin, which is the 7th largest in Turkey, located in the lakes region. Despite being one of the largest lakes in Turkey, some serious problems have emerged in Burdur lake that threaten the future of the lake. Burdur Lake has two major problems. The first of these is pollution. Industrial and domestic wastes from all settlements near the lake, especially in Burdur province, are discharged directly into the lake without any treatment. This has caused serious pollution in the lake. The second problem is the rapid decline in lake level due to drought and improper irrigation. Due to this rapid level decrease, the shape of the lake has changed and large areas have turned into land, especially in shallow areas. Since the depth of the lake is quite high, there is no danger of drying out, but it is a serious problem in ecological terms because the shallow areas where birds stay are decreasing, and the decrease in water also leads to an increase in the intensity of pollution. In addition, the 16-meter level change between 1970 and 2019 caused the salinity rate in the water to increase approximately twice. All these data show the urgency of the measures to be taken regarding environmental pollution and drought in and around Burdur Lake. Today, although public institutions, non-governmental organizations, municipality and city university working on the environment in Burdur have revealed this level of pollution with various studies and researches, the steps for a definitive solution have not been taken yet. In September 2018, the “Hand in Hand for Burdur Lake” campaign was also launched regionally, but considering the situation in 2022, it seems that this campaign should be supported in a long-term and stronger manner. With this project we prepared in line with this information and needs, we aimed to increase the knowledge, skills and awareness of individuals in the European Union, especially the people of Burdur, with the support of European youth and non-governmental organizations. In our country, which has important lakes such as the European Union, which is home to half a million lakes, the second largest salt lake in the world, and the largest soda lake in the world, many strategies and policies are carried out for the protection of lakes. In order to achieve the success of these policies, the development of civil society capacity and the creation of more civil society activities on the protection of lakes are among the objectives of our project. The goals of our project, -To contribute to the emergence of more sensitive and more conscious societies about environmental pollution, -To increase the international recognition of the beauties of Burdur and Burdur lakes, -To draw attention to the problems of the Burdur lake, -Contributing to the Global Environmental Awareness Day, -To support the policies and studies carried out for the protection of Burdur Lake, -To draw attention to the problems of lakes in the European Union and to contribute to their protection, -To contribute to Turkey's European Union membership process, -To support and develop the existing multicultural structure in the European Union, -To increase the knowledge of young people about the environment and to improve their behavior in protecting nature, -To enable young people to develop themselves in key competences, -Contributing to the promotion of Erasmus+ program locally.
