Young people are quickly and easily affected by social and cultural changes. During adolescence, individuals tend to compare themselves with their peers, emulate and imitate others, and focus more on themselves and their appearance. In addition, young people who are open to external influences and who are more prone to being exposed to external influences than other age groups, interact with many communication tools in their daily lives in the post-truth age we live in, and in this context, both content and image manipulation are subject to psychological pressure. It is possible to say that the communication tool where this pressure and manipulation is experienced most intensely is social media. It is seen that unrealistic body ideals are normalized on social media platforms, and individuals manipulate the content through various effects and filters while sharing an image. In this respect, it is stated that there is a direct correlation between social media and mental health and body dissatisfaction (Polygeia, 2018). If it is necessary to mention the intensity of the use of social media platforms, it is possible to say that 25% of the world's population actively uses these platforms. For this reason, the proportion of young users is quite high. It has been observed that young people are exposed to excessive content manipulation since information can be produced, shared, and disseminated much faster with the new media, as well as the lack of control over new media tools such as social media platforms. Since there is no control over the images and content shared on media such as social media, the accuracy and reliability of these posts are questionable. In addition, the acceleration and increase of content and image sharing have emerged as the reasons that lead experts to research this subject. In this context, the negative effects of young people's use of social media on them have recently started to be on the agenda. Focusing on this issue, the harm that social media platforms can cause to the mental and physical health of young people has become a cause for concern. As a result of the studies conducted in this direction, a significant relationship was found between the occurrence of depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) in young individuals and the use of social media. Content on social media, both in terms of manipulated and inaccurate information; affects young people negatively through the filtered visuals shared by users. As a result of recent research, it has been found that young people exposed to manipulated images through social media are more likely to be influenced by their environment compared to other age groups, there are negative changes in their self-perceptions and their body image is negatively affected. The primary concern of experts is that visual social media platforms regarding photo and image sharing such as Instagram and Snapchat etc., allow people to make changes on the images as they wish and share the content in this way without any supervision while sharing content. This, in turn, normalizes unrealistic body ideals and negatively affects the body perception, self-esteem, and psychological state of young people.
