Background

Many scientific studies and protocol development studies have been carried out worldwide especially in the European Union, to promote and assess farm animal welfare and thus improve animal production. However, often there are difficulties in transferring this information to stakeholders and especially to farmers, so as to guarantee high standard husbandry practices. The project team has been involved in many international scientific studies on farm animal welfare. Through the Welfaruminant project, they aim to convey scientific knowledge to current and future practitioners and other technical personnel as a way to get the best information to farmers. The expertise and experience of the project partners in farm animal health and welfare ensured that the most updated, innovative and scientific-based information, resulting from studies carried out in the EU, was accurately transmitted to farmers. This increased knowledge should make farmers more aware of ruminant welfare and help them improve management and handling, leading to better production and product quality. In addition, the roles of veterinarian practitioners and other technical assistance providers will be further enhanced in supporting farmers.
