Objectives

The Powerworms Project aimed to study, research, and validate the production techniques and characteristics of vermicomposting in order to transfer knowledge to the relevant parties: farmers and consumers. The project will encourage networking and discussion among researchers, academics, public institution representatives, marketing experts, consumers, and local producers to share different perspectives and expert opinions and discover new opportunities and ways to improve current production processes and facilitate product innovation. The main objectives of this project are: (1) to determine the level of contribution of vermicomposting to the productivity of rural agriculture and farming and (2) to demonstrate the multiple benefits of this technology: low-cost biofertilizer production, environmental management of solid waste and agricultural residues, increased soil fertility, better tasting quality food (3) to teach chemical-free vermicomposting production techniques to farmers and homegrown amateurs and (4) to increase agroecology awareness among citizens.

Background

The increasing amount of waste due to population growth, urbanization and industrialization deepens environmental problems. The environmentally friendly transformation of organic waste is critical for sustainable agriculture. Vermicomposting reduces the use of chemical fertilizers and increases soil fertility by converting waste into high-quality organic fertilizer through worms. This method reduces greenhouse gas emissions while also offering economic and ecological benefits. PowerWORMS emphasizes the role of worm composting for sustainable soil management and food systems in Europe. It aims to increase environmental awareness and resilience in line with the new Common Agricultural Policy and the European Soil Strategy. PowerWORMS aims to support the transition to a more sustainable, resilient and healthy food system by utilizing the natural power of worms. The project aims to promote formal and non-formal education activities on vermicomposting for farmers, students, families, teachers and professionals. The project partners aim to contribute to the maximization of environmental, economic and social benefits by emphasizing the role of worm composting in an integrated agricultural model across Europe.
