Since 2002, there has been a noticeable improvement in gender equality in terms of representation in Belgium. The percentage of women in parliament has been on the rise for nearly a decade, with women accounting for 29.6% of parliamentarians in 2003 and 41.4% in 2021. Furthermore, this percentage in Belgium exceeds the European average throughout the entire period. However, these successes hide concerning facts and disparities. Women are not a homogeneous social category, and our concern is that despite the observed improvements, some are being left behind. A 2013 study, for example, demonstrates that Belgian women need a higher level of education than men to be elected. Women from marginalized communities, such as the Roma, are more likely to face economic difficulties, high illiteracy rates, significant family responsibilities, and numerous other forms of discrimination. This combination of challenges and discrimination hinders their participation in decision-making processes and democratic mechanisms at the local, national, and European levels. Some women do not have access to fundamental knowledge about their rights and the public services and assistance to which they are entitled. This situation runs counter to Belgian objectives of participatory democracy and European goals of social cohesion and involvement of civil society organizations and EU citizens. That's why, with the Women in Action program, we aimed to offer a program with the ambition of enabling young women aged 18 to 30 to make their voices heard in Belgian and European political and civic life, to take their place in society. The project created opportunities for civic and political participation for young women participating in the program. To facilitate this participation, they were informed about their rights as Belgian and European citizens and gained an understanding of Belgian and European parliamentary and democratic life. Our project included activities that connected participants with important figures in Belgian politics, as well as a visit and activity at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
