Objectives

The DRAMA project was completed with the collaboration of five organizations from the Netherlands, Slovakia, Italy, Turkey, and Romania, all dedicated to combating racism in their communities. The main principle of the European Union, respect for diversity, was emphasized throughout the project. During the COVID-19 pandemic, racist prejudice and discrimination towards migrants in European countries increased significantly. Migrants were unjustly blamed for the spread of the virus and subjected to mandatory quarantine and irregular fines. This situation led to serious social problems, including social exclusion based on race, religion, social status, financial situation, disability, and sexism, particularly affecting migrants. In response to these challenges, the DRAMA project was designed to promote tolerance and social inclusion and to combat racism through positive youth work. The project aimed to empower, engage, and connect young people in solidarity against discriminatory social conflicts. The theater was chosen as the inclusion tool to create awareness among young people about racism against migrants and encourage them to stand against it. Specific objectives of the project were identified based on tailored needs, including increasing the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies of 36 participants from six organizations in using theater to combat racism and discrimination toward migrants. The project also aimed to develop the theatrical capacity of partner organizations and participants to promote social inclusion of migrants in local communities. Through theatrical activities, intercultural dialogue was fostered among the 36 young participants, enabling them to better understand empathy, mutual respect, and solidarity. In addition to achieving specific objectives, the DRAMA project also aimed to raise awareness about the opportunities offered by Erasmus+ and youth mobility programs and encourage participants to engage in future projects and collaborations. The project also sought to encourage European organizations, with at least three local organizations per partner (a total of 18 organizations), to use theater as a creative tool for the social inclusion of migrants. Throughout the project, participants engaged in non-formal education activities, which helped them improve their transversal skills, knowledge, and competences related to social inclusion and the EU Youth Strategy. The use of theatrical tools enabled participants to create meaningful dialogues and develop solidarity competencies through empowerment, engagement, and connection. The successful completion of the DRAMA project contributed to fostering a more inclusive and tolerant society in Europe.
