With this pilot project we aimed to invest in raising the level of media literacy and civic and global competences of the children in Bulgaria and Slovenia. We aimed to develop and test in primary schools a new approach to teaching these competences along various subjects in schools, starting as early as in primary school. We utilized existing quality media for kids as a tool for introducing basic democratic and civic values, and building up the media literacy of the next generation. Part of the project was the creation of articles for the two media for kids (published by the two partner organizations) that can be used by both teachers in school, and by the schoolchildren in their free time. With this we wanted to achieve a growing relevance to the educational objectives and sustainability of the two media.
With this pilot project we aimed to raise the level of media literacy and civic and global competences of the children in Bulgaria and Slovenia, by proposing a new methodology for teaching in schools, starting as early as in primary school. The project aimed to innovate the teaching methods concerning media literacy and civic education in primary and secondary school, and to develop the thirst of the youngsters for quality journalism from early on, in order to prevent them from falling for fake news as they grow up. Another aim was to test approaches for educating the youngsters in key aspects of democracy, and stimulating their appetite for civic engagement and active participation. Finally, with this project we aimed at supporting the work on key competencies of the youngest in our societies, in which - according to PISA studies – the young people in our two countries are performing badly, namely the functional literacy and global competencies. The needs we addressed with this project are to raise the functional literacy, media literacy, and the civic and global competences of the young people in BUlgaria and Slovenia, starting with primary schoolchildren.
