Objectives

The primary objective of the project was to provide educational access to farmers, local authorities, individuals, and other stakeholders in rural areas. The training courses were created to deliver insight into the various topics identified during the first phase of the project, "Identification of Areas and Needs." These included the most recent agro-technologies, the circular economy, waste management, and resource management, among other topics. The ultimate objective was to encourage these groups, whose livelihoods are most affected by environmental issues, with the tools and knowledge to adopt more environmentally friendly practices, thereby mitigating environmental issues while simultaneously improving their production and management methods and initiating positive, sustainable change. This would increase their competitiveness, market value, and productivity. By promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices, we aim to benefit both local communities and the environment.

Background

The undeniable rise in environmental challenges demands urgent attention and immediate action. Sustainability, particularly in agriculture, emerges as a vital solution for mitigating climate change and other environmental threats, given its intricate connection to them. In response, a consortium of environmental and technological experts proposed the project "Sustainability for Rural Areas" (Sustain4Rural), aiming to address these concerns. The main objective of this project is to actively engage with stakeholders and individuals in rural areas, providing them with knowledge and practical tools to implement sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions. The selected target group is based on the recognition that those residing in rural areas often have fewer opportunities to acquire such knowledge, while people in urban regions typically have easier access to information and solutions. Most importantly, the target group possesses the motivation to act since they are most affected by environmental threats, which directly impact their livelihoods. As a result, they hold the greatest potential to initiate positive change and generate a sustainable impact that benefits both the environment and rural communities.
