Objectives

While the benefits of the ocean to humans’ lives have been widely documented and reported (Halpern et al. 2012; Daigle et al. 2016), young people, as derived from the activities of the KA3 project “Youth 4 the sea and vice versa” coordinated by Active Zone Outdoor and aimed at bringing youth closer to the sea, are not holistically and fully aware of how their actions and activities affect the ocean and how the ocean and the sea can affect them in terms of enhancing their mental health and well-being, participating in sea recreational opportunities and following a blue career to mention some. In particular, during the discussions with young people in the context of that project, it became clear that they are unaware of opportunities for maritime employability and employment in shipping companies as well as what actions they should undertake in order to promote sea sports to youth or even how to protect the ocean from pollution or other human activities. On the other hand, the project revealed the dynamic structure of the methodology of the Structured Dialogue in engaging young people with diverse backgrounds with policy and decision makers in order to collaboratively identify and agree on measures and solutions to cultivate a culture of sea awareness among youngsters in Cyprus. In addition, having some of the measures adopted by relevant stakeholders and policy makers (e.g. Shipping Deputy Ministry, Youth Board of Cyprus), youth participants realised that their voices can be heard and taken into account in the development of youth policy. Having identified as the main need the lack of ocean literacy among youth in Cyprus, the Youth Goes Blue project built on the outcomes of the project “Youth 4 the sea and vice versa” aiming at engaging young people with policy and decision makers as well as professionals in the field of blue economy in collaborative and interactive dialogues, under the prism of the Structured Democratic Dialogue principles, in order to address the following objectives: * To increase the interest of youth in pursuing a Blue Career as a means to tackle youth unemployment; * To explore the positive impact of the ocean for the physical and mental health of youth; * To create accessible sea opportunities for all youth with particular focus on youth with disabilities; * To promote sea and beach sports as a vehicle to enhance the well-being and the physical and mental health of young people; * To raise awareness on the necessity of strategising actions towards the environmental protection and the responsible exploitation of the ocean; * To highlight the potential of the methodology of the Structured Democratic Dialogue in discussions among young people and policy makers; * To develop a Policy Paper summarising the outcomes of the project dialogues aiming at contributing towards policy reform for youth.
