Objectives

The aim of the project was to develop an innovative pedagogical approach to teaching minimal music, as this music can appeal to and involve both professionals and amateurs, younger and older people. Furthermore, Minimal Music connects different cultures and can be described as a true form of intercultural music. It aims not only at "practising and performing" but also at "creating" music as a common creative outcome. Operational objectives: The project aimed at strengthening Minimal Music as an inclusive medium at European level. It collected good practices and brought the pioneers of Minimal Music together in a European network and on a common professional basis. It sought to raise the profile of Minimal Music in Europe in order to realise its potential in adult education. To achieve this, the project aimed to develop a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for music education professionals, not only in theory but also in practice in a pilot phase, and to link it to European educational instruments. Finally, the project aimed to develop a network and a strong valorisation platform to offer its future services to a growing community of like-minded organisations and individuals.

Background

There is a strong need for inclusive learning and collaborative formats in music education to reach students from diverse backgrounds. Increasing numbers of students are struggling to access or even enter the formal - and sometimes very elitist - music education system. Consequently, there is a need for innovative, less formalised learning formats to be developed and piloted. Minimal Music has great potential to meet this need. Minimal Music is popular in America and the most famous composers of the genre come from there. The NEMO project will allow European educational stakeholders to explore this genre and help them to connect and network. Music education has great potential for the inclusion of migrant pupils and pupils with disabilities (see e.g. Merkt 2019, Klingmann/Schilling-Sandvoss 2022). However, practical implementation is still lacking in many cases. Hence, there is a strong demand to equip music educators with the necessary competences to teach Minimal Music in an inclusive way.
