VIRTUS aimed to achieve several key objectives: Develop and implement specialized vocational training programs tailored for individuals with ASD, incorporating VR technology to make the training more engaging and effective. Facilitate better employment opportunities for individuals with ASD by enhancing their vocational skills and making employers more aware of the capabilities of these individuals. Equip professionals working with individuals with ASD with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively use VR technology and cater to the unique vocational training needs of this group. Increase social inclusion and wellbeing for individuals with ASD through improved access to vocational training and employment opportunities. Showcase the effectiveness of innovative training methods, such as VR, in vocational training for individuals with ASD, setting a precedent for future educational practices. By achieving these objectives, the project sought to bridge the gap between individuals with ASD and the labor market, ensuring that these individuals could access meaningful employment and fully participate in society.
VIRTUS was initiated to tackle the significant gap in VET and employment opportunities for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It aimed to address the unique challenges faced by these individuals in accessing quality VET and meaningful employment. Needs Addressed: Lack of specialized VET as traditional VET programs often fail to meet the needs of individuals with ASD, particularly in accommodating their learning styles and social interaction challenges. Individuals with ASD face major obstacles in finding meaningful employment due to limited vocational training tailored to their needs and employers' lack of awareness and understanding of ASD, leading to fewer suitable job opportunities. The project highlighted the need for engaging and effective training. Using Virtual Reality (VR) was identified as the strategy to make VET more accessible and attractive to individuals with ASD. Professionals working with ASD individuals require specialized training in VR technology use and understanding ASD-specific vocational and pre-vocational needs, to aid their transition into the labor market. The project aimed at promoting broader social inclusion and wellbeing, facilitating full societal participation for individuals with ASD.
