Objectives

You(th) Can Sing! addresses culture and identity by using music as a tool for self-expression, intercultural communication, collaboration and thus integration. Our needs assessment within our partnership shows that: - There are limited opportunities to promote the personal, intercultural and social development of young people in an international context. - Our participants are general education schools that want to prepare their students to be engaged, active citizens who work and cooperate internationally. This is the time when students, as teenagers, are forming their view of the world and negotiating their place in society. For this, an intercultural experience is probably most effective. - Schools have found international creative collaboration based on music, where students have to work together to overcome a challenge, to be an effective means by which they can have a meaningful intercultural experience even with limited foreign language skills. This would also replace stereotypes and prejudices with real knowledge and experiences of their international classmates. - In our Egyptian partner school, music is currently not taught as a basic part of the curriculum, but always "only" additionally as a study group or optional subject. This denies students the opportunity to express musical ideas, to create and and experiment. - Staff, prospective teachers, organisations and institutions are not familiar with the potential of using non-formal learning with music, of using music to enhance the learning experience and personal development of young people. - Young people in our Egyptian partner school have very limited opportunities to travel and collaborate internationally. The resulting needs were then translated into the following project logic: IF we give young people the opportunity to use music as a means of exploration, expression, communication and collaboration with peers from other countries, cultures and languages AND give young people a safe space to experiment, collect and explore musical artefacts, engage with local and reflect on their own cultural backgrounds AND support young people to develop confidence and interpersonal skills, musical skills, language skills and life skills. THEN we achieve our GOALS: We provide students with a valuable intercultural communication and cooperation experience that will benefit them as they become young adults. AND we improve the level of interest, confidence and further opportunities for continued non-formal learning in schools in the the context of intercultural projects, especially for those who have fewer opportunities. AND we present the young people's findings at a high artistic level to local, national, European partners and audiences.
