The youth exchange ‘A Green Tomorrow’ aimed to connect young people to sustainability projects and to introduce them to alternative lifestyles. Young people are gathering on the streets to voice the issue of climate change. We wanted to provide them with another perspective by choosing an ecovillage as the venue. An ecovillage is an intentional or traditional community that is consciously designed through locally owned, participatory processes to regenerate social and natural environments. The 4 dimensions of sustainability (ecology, economy, social and culture) are integrated into a holistic approach. Ecovillages are models of sustainable settlements that serve as training & learning centres offering non-formal learning activities plus, most importantly, informal learning through the immersion experience of sharing ecovillage life. By connecting young people to ecovillages and sustainable projects they gained access to a bottom-up approach to the societal challenges as well as places to recharge as organisers of big movements because it tends to exhaust themselves in the process. We also wanted to connect youth on a European level to expand their horizons beyond their region or country, creating a supportive network. Furthermore we provided tools for the personal development of each participant as presented in the youth exchange timetable. Workshops and hands-on activities complemented each other to foster the key competences. It was reflected and measured by the YouthPass and in the group leaders’ report after the activity. We, as youth, creating this project, saw the issues that are awaiting us on our way to adulthood and are also the rising awareness of other young people within our generation. Through the project we wanted to tackle the issue of unemployment together with the chance of showing multiple ways of self-employment in the ecovillage and to broaden the mind of the participants through that. We also wished to empower young people to live in a sustainable way to help battle the environmental changes. Arriving from different backgrounds we created a safe environment and respectful ways to handle intercultural differences. The exchange was in the ecovillage Sieben Linden where the participants were able to observe the feeling of connection through the community. We wanted to include youth that have fewer opportunities (migration background, learning difficulties, low income, rural youth) and empowered them in showing the different ways of functioning and living.
