Objectives

In the last years we have seen the rise of extremism in Europe and it seems that the less we cooperate the worse we get at handling challenges. This is very deplorable, especially since we are facing huge problems of a global nature that no single country can solve. We need cooperation and collaboration and a strong Europe that tackles challenges together. Our objective was to help youths become active citizens who were able to influence tomorrow’s society in positive ways—not by screaming the loudest and getting their voices heard, but by understanding different values and opinions and finding ways to accommodate most people and build an open and tolerant society in which everyone could be happy. We used roleplaying as the methodology in this event. The project offered an environment in which a stronger European identity could evolve among young people. However, unlike other youth projects, our project used the approach of thrusting young people into situations in which they could immerse themselves and in which they experienced national and European values. Going through this experience created a much stronger and much longer-lasting impression than simply discussing European values in a workshop. This was confirmed by seeing the bonds that were created during the event. The participants are still talking with each other on a regular basis, involved in an international youth community. A primary objective of the project was creating a strong group of young people who got actively involved in contributing to a better Europe with the perspective of supporting each other across borders in the sense of a true community. We wanted these people to serve as multipliers and become active in youth work, especially in supporting young people with disadvantages and those who needed support. Other important objectives were the expansion of the participants' minds and their awareness of other European cultures with the corresponding understanding of cultural values. Further objectives were strengthening the participants' competencies, their positive outlook, their active support of democratic values, as well as international friendship and cooperation. Over the last years we have developed a learning approach that we call ERA (European Role-playing Approach) which weaves learning objectives into a story that the participants experience. The role-playing experience works on several levels. Participants play together in mixed international teams in which they make the experience of working together and facing challenges together. The challenges will be created in such a way that players need to challenge their own beliefs and values in order to succeed. For instance, in the game a situation might arise in which they have to choose between individual freedom and the greater good of the community. Daily reflection rounds are held with the intention of helping the participants understand the different European values and the shared values. We have used ERA in many youth groups locally in various European countries but we had a lot of requests for teaching those who experienced ERA to create their own stories to run games for other youths. For this reason we decided not only to use ERA to support the participants' development of skills and a European mindset, we also wanted to run several workshops in which we teach the participants how to create their own immersive stories and how to run gaming sessions well. We plan to write high quality role-playing adventures and then take them public and play through them with other youths at a role-playing convention. The main motivation for carrying out the event in Germany was that we had a great opportunity to integrate the event into a game convention (DreieichCon) in the city of Dreieich. The organizers had agreed to give us space to run parts of the game experiences there in public, which was a wonderful opportunity to reach out to other youths. We aimed to take the final scenes of the experience to the convention and share the value discussions with other youths there. So the project would not only have had an impact on the participants but also encouraged other youths to become active citizens with a feeling of empowerment to shape Europe's future society. It also had a built-in dissemination event, which made our youth work and the Erasmus+ program very visible. In addition we had the opportunity to have a meeting with the mayor at the city hall where we discussed youth policy and modern ways of engaging youths more in political life and encouraging youths to become leaders in the local community.
