Objectives

With the project “Advocating for green, inclusive and virtual volunteering – European youth workers building competencies in the context of COVID19”, we wanted to respond to new trends and challenges in the field of international voluntary service and youth work. Together with the participating youth workers we wanted to analyse the effects of 2 years of the Pandemic and to find solutions for a sustainable future of international volunteering. The project was responding to overall European and global trends, but also to the specific needs and challenges of our work practice when engaging young volunteers: • First of all, young people in Europe are organising themselves more and more in trans-national movements (e.g. Fridays for Future on climate justice). Our partners were interested in finding ways to better connect IVS to these movements and learn how to engage young people e.g. through campaigning and advocacy work on such topics. • Secondly, inclusion has been central to our previous collaborative work but many youth workers also found it challenging to offer the right kind of support to young people with a disability or with other obstacles. We therefore wanted to further explore and develop a shared vision of what inclusion can look like in IVS with the aim to jointly discuss ideas for a pilot project where several member organisations come together to learn from each other on inclusive IVS. • Thirdly, the pandemic still is challenging IVS organisations in many ways and the objective was to identify suitable ways to best adapt including programmes of virtual volunteering. • Lastly, the ESC programme has been running for 1,5 years and we felt it was time to evaluate and get a better understanding of good practices and how to further strengthen the quality and impact of the programme implementation within our network In this context the objectives of the project were: • To develop a strategic framework for adapting youth work to (post-)pandemic times • To evaluate our participation in ESC and the Erasmus+ programmes and exchange good practices and lessons learned • To exchange inclusive practices and methods in IVS and agree on concepts for future activities and projects • To build youth workers’ competences on advocacy and campaigning to support youth-led climate change and feminist movements
