Objectives

For the combat of the crucial issue of youth social exclusion, surveys the last years find that apart from being a source of entertainment and physical fitness, outdoor activities are a powerful social and educational tool in achieving goals on not only personal development but also peace in society. Outdoor activities allow youth to actively participate and to learn by doing, as learning requires a lot of work and activities. They help youth to change theoretical knowledge into practice, record it in the long-term memory, and create solutions to problems they encounter in daily life, based on what they have learned. Therefore, through outdoor activities we can educate youth on leadership, foster role models, promote peace and give youth hope for the future. SPIEL was a European youth project which aimed to address the challenges of social exclusion and marginalization of young people while raising awareness on the importance of outdoor activities as a worldwide known tool for tackling inequalities and social exclusion which gave the base of our initiative designed by young people for young people. uDevelop's belief was that outdoor activities are a key tool for developing important social and personal values in youth, such as team spirit, inclusion, discipline, perseverance and fair play. We proudly embraced the belief that young people that practice outdoor activities were less likely to fall into extremism and it facilitates their inclusion, brought them the opportunity to acquire sport values as part of their educational process and allowed them to feel part of a group and society. SPIEL aimed at providing a Workshop, where youth workers learned to successfully implement Outdoor Activities. They received a hands-on experience on how to use them as an educational tool for youth and social development. The project placed a significant emphasis on the inclusion of marginalized young people with fewer opportunities, who demonstrated great potential and interested in becoming community youth workers. The project trained and equipped youth workers and youth leaders who worked directly with disadvantaged young people in underprivileged rural and urban areas with essential tools, methods and skills on how to use the European Training Strategy (ETS) methodology to provide sustainable development in their regions. SPIEL's objective was to build the capacity of 40 youth workers from 10 countries in two activities: (1) a Seminar and (2) a Training Course, taking place respectively in Latvia and in Germany. The first activity set a common understanding of ETS among all participants by, for and through sport. A1 provided a perfect opportunity for preparation and introduction to A2, where participants, as experienced youth workers, developed ETS tools, tested them and planned their practical usage. During the first activity, we set a common understanding in all participants regarding education BY, FOR and THROUGH Outdoor Activities. Objectives: •Raised awareness on the importance of intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding and tolerance among young Europeans of different origins •Drawn attention to the importance of social inclusion especially concerning young people from disadvantaged cultural and ethnic minority groups •Developed young people’s skills and competences to become more active, sporty and health conscious European citizens •Made young people advocates of inclusion, tolerance, dialogue and active, healthy living in their local communities •Provided opportunities for young people with fewer opportunities through outdoor activities-based non-formal education Needs addressed: -Improved the skills and critical thinking of youth workers and gain knowledge on how to use outdoor activities as an educational tool -Got a better understanding of non-formal education and its many opportunities for lifelong learning -Developed sustainable and diverse youth network -Generated new project ideas to be applied under Erasmus+ -Met colleagues who worked with youth and exchange best practices One of the central issues in these challenges was that national education systems simply did not offer training in the skills required for the labor market, leading to thousands of unfilled positions across the continent. ETS filled this gap by improving soft skills, intercultural competencies, and teamwork of youth from across the EU. The project was in line with all objectives of Erasmus+ Program and EU Youth Strategy and, more specifically, contributed to the achievement of the main objective of the renewed framework for European cooperation in the youth field (2019-2027). The project improved the efficiency of cooperation among youth leaders and increased capacities of young people in the EU. Through Non-Formal Education (NFE) methods, the project provided opportunities for young people in education and enhanced their employability in the labor market.
