Despite the progress in implementing the sustainable development goals and ratification of the Paris Agreement, unsustainable trends continue to affect many areas of our everyday life and strong action is required to cope with recent challenges. The mainstreaming of sustainable development merely in the policies is not enough and there is a need to transmit its principles to the wider society, specifically targeting youth. Therefore, through this project we addressed the young people from Bulgaria, Cyprus, Romania and Italy – where the topic of sustainability and environment protection is generally overlooked by the youth generation. Since young people are prone to absorb changes and hence, through this project we introduced them to the dimensions of sustainable development, raising awareness of unsustainable trends and dangers and helping them critically assess their daily choices. In this way, we empowered them to act as changemakers and advocate the concept of sustainable development locally. After we successfully implementing this project, in particular the main activity - Youth Exchange – we accomplished the following objectives: - we raised participants' understanding and knowledge on the concept of sustainable development and its environmental, economic, social and cultural dimensions; - we facilitated the process of exchanging personal experiences through peer to peer learning and country realities on sustainable development among young people; - we empowered young people to participate actively in civil society to foster sustainable development; - we encouraged participants to live sustainably in their everyday life through critically reflecting on their daily choices and consumption habits; - we fostered intercultural learning and dialogue among participants; - we increased participants' knowledge of Erasmus+ programme and introduce its funding opportunities. Moreover, the young people who participated in this project gained useful knowledge on the topic, become aware of their own consumption habits, learned from each other and came up with creative and innovative approaches on how to reduce their ecological footprint and live sustainable. Last but not the least, the activities carried out during the youth exchange contributed to reaching the specific objective of Erasmus+ programme, as the project made participants conscious of current unsustainable trends, stimulated their active citizenship and participation, as well as increased their tolerance towards cultural differences. Nevertheless. The young people were encouraged to take the initiative in searching for solutions to the identified problems and worked together on future projects.
