Objectives

The bicycle, a non-motorized vehicle composed of various components, has several advantages such as cost savings, environmental benefits, physical and mental well-being, energy conservation, social connections, and civic engagement, in addition to being a convenient mode of transportation. Although bicycles are commonly used for short distances, they can also be used for mountain, long-distance, and recreational purposes. According to Eurostat data, the proportion of Europeans who engage in less than 2.5 hours of physical activity per month is 71.1%, with bicycle usage declining as we move from north to south. This highlights the need for alternative modes of transportation that are sustainable and environmentally friendly, particularly in urban areas where public transportation systems are not well developed. The aim of the project was to improve cycling and promote healthy driving habits, reduce health issues and accidents, conserve natural resources, and stimulate economic growth among young people. The Bike Time project, which was organized by the Civil Connections Community Foundation, aimed to increase the bicycle usage of 51 young people from Denmark, Turkey, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Latvia, and Romania. It took place from 26 april-6 may, BURSA, Turkey, and focused on improving participants' knowledge of cycling, safe driving, and basic mechanics. The project had several specific goals, such as teaching at least 12 young participants who did not know how to ride a bicycle, promoting safe driving practices through the proper selection of bicycles and safety equipment, teaching traffic regulations, developing skills in basic bicycle maintenance and mechanics, and raising awareness about the physical and mental health of participants.
