The youth exchange project “Shattered Glass” aimed to bring together young Europeans from Spain, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Greece to give young people skills and competencies for better access to reliable information, to support their ability to critically evaluate information and to engage in participatory and constructive dialogue. Disinformation, fake news and access to reliable information are big challenges for the European Union and its Member States. On the one hand, fake news influences people’s behaviour and, on the other hand, it is very difficult to convince people of the falsity of such news, even with facts. In the last year, the coronavirus emergency has brought the issue to the forefront. The ability to respond critically to online propaganda, disinformation and fake news is more than a protection tool; analytical and critical thinking, knowledge and understanding of the world, including the role of language and communication, is an important democratic competence (Council of Europe’s Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture). Verification is an act of responsibility and involves the ability to analyse news by checking it against data and facts from reliable sources. Therefore, we need to know, understand and acquire skills and competencies to take responsibility for what we share and be aware of what our actions can generate.“Shattered Glass” proposed the following specific objectives: - to offer a space for meeting, dialogue and learning; - to offer a learning opportunity to young people from different European countries, also through digital interaction tools; - to increase critical thinking mechanisms and the active participation of young people in the debate on the importance of media literacy; - promote discussion on fact-checking and verification tools, digital media safety and freedom of expression; - promote awareness of the nature of fake news, develop skills to identify facts and opinions and acquire fact-checking skills; - empower young people as active citizens, giving them useful tools with which they can develop awareness-raising actions; - to make young people aware of the importance of sustainable lifestyles by making them understand how important is the individual action for change; - promote the opportunities offered by the Erasmus+ programme among young people and increase their knowledge of non-formal education methods and tools; - promote European values of democracy, freedom and equality.
